Level 5 Diploma in Substance Misuse Theory & Assessment Skills
This course is for individuals who want to gain specialist knowledge and skills to assess and work with individuals with substance misuse issues. It is aimed at those who are working in the drug/alcohol field or whose work brings them into contact with individuals with drug/alcohol issues.
The course is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland. It is a Level 5 qualification on the National Qualification Framework (NQF) (pending accreditation). This means it can be used as Continuing Professional Development or as a progression route to further study
Course Content
Candidates will undertake modules in the following areas:
- Context and trends in Substance Misuse
- Models of Treatment (including Pharmacological)
- Motivational Interviewing
- Assessment Tools/Psychometrics
- The Therapeutic relationship and its impact on substance misuse interventions
- Ethics
- Working with Trauma
- Impact of substance misuse on the family
Course Requirements (to be completed during the course)
- Assignments
- Completed Portfolio
- 90% attendance
- Fees: £1550 (including £200 deposit) (this includes registration fees)
Course Outcome
As a result of the course candidates will be able to demonstrate:
- A multi-theoretical approach to assessing and working with substance misuse issues

Entry Requirements
In order to join the course you will need:
- To demonstrate Competency in English
- Application form and interview to be completed
- A personal and professional reference
